Post Christmas Recap

Hi everybody, more AGU and WY/ NE pictures to come in a bit but in the meantime here's some stuff from the past couple of days since we came back. Sunday night was the annual Christmas Eve at Sam (and now Jill)'s place. It was pretty fun and a common thread to the evening was stuck vehicles. I helped push this 2wd truck out onto the road (it was worse than it looked by a smidge). It's sometimes hard to believe they let Texans move up here. This guy had this big ol impress everyone in Texas truck but it's only 2wd and he couldn't even get out of the soft snow on level ground.

So, that was Christmas Eve. Today was finish things up at the old cabin day. Here's a few pictures of the fire everyone missed (and you missed out). So, we say goodbye to the storage lift vans from the big furniture move:

Finally, torching the spool (Hagen's taking an ax to the spool here):

Check out how hot the fire got, this is steel from the spool:

And we finished the day off with some nice night skiing on campus:

Totally ready for bed now...

Hey Bob,

Great site. Completely understood about Texans, and am currently surrounded by them... Not sure Mike qualifies anymore, so no worries.

Hope all is well on your end.

Hi Bob,

Great cabin/house...

I will give you a call when I get to good ol' Fairbanks. Leaving the 3rd and expect to arrive the 7th.

See ya,
Kim

Re: Big furniture move - nice looking piano - bet it needs tuning after that chilly ride! I've tuned my own saving big bucks - picked up a 1/4 inch hex wrench at the hardware store - you need a good ear and patience but it works. A pail of water or humidifier nearby helps keep it in tune re dry air if you're burning with wood.

Happy New Year to you and all.
PS Great looking cabin.

Hi Bob, Looks like a great party. Our winter so far is still fall weather. No snow or below freezing for any length. I,m concerned about the maple syrup this year. If we don't get some cold weather in Feb and March it could be trouble. Are your temperatures nromal for this time of year? I know talking to Jill the snow cover is light.

Cliff

Hi Everyone,
Awesome to hear from you John, are you still in Iraq? Larry said you were working with his brother for a while. I don't know, I think Mike's gotta still be more Texan than Alaskan (hopefully!).

Awesome Kim, give me a call at work once you get in!

Hi Cliff,
Good tip about the piano. The old cabin was super moist but the new place is way drier. We're having a cold but not really frigid winter. Firing up the sauna this weekend hopefully (cross fingers!). The winter has felt pretty cold but I just checked the climate record for this year and it's still just a bit warmer than the longterm average. We're way under for snow though so who knows. I hope you get a cold snap! We're slowly sipping away on the last of it. I hear NY had the first snow free December in a super longtime. Happy new year, too!

Hey Bob,

Still in Iraq working. Happy New Year, and hope all is well on your end.

Small world indeed. I never asked his brother, but remember a Hinzman we were working with over here.

Say hello to Larry for me.

Say hello to Mike for me. Hope both are doing well.

Be Safe and Easy on the Mountain Dew....

Hi John,
Awesome dude. You should write a book once you come back. I was offered a cellphone tower installing job in 2005 over there but thought it was to sketch. The cash and time off part of the job sounded great though.

Larry says hi and hopes you might drop him a line (ffldh@uaf.edu).

I haven't heard from Mike in a couple weeks but I think he's chilling in Texas this winter. They've got a house down there now (plus the Fairbanks one). I don't know if you've heard from Emily lately but she's in Mexico this winter, gone till May. They have pictures to make everyone jealous here:
Emily's Mexico trip
Pretty rough life. Well, hope things stay awesome over there!
